Benidorm creator tells how Tim Healy briefly ‘died’ after being struck down by mystery illness

Benidorm star Tim Healy “died” after being struck down with a mystery illness, the show’s creator has said.

Derren Litten revealed the North East actor was brought back to life after falling ill while filming the hit comedy in Spain last year.

Thankfully, the doctors were able to resuscitate Tim and the 65-year-old has now returned to filming the next series of the ITV show.

Derren told Cool FM Spain: “They operated on Tim and it didn’t go well at all. He died. He flat lined.

“They had to resuscitate him. He was in intensive care for a month.”

Tim, who has played cross-dressing Lesley in Benidorm since 2010, was struck down with the illness as the cast was filming series nine of the show.

Derren said: “He was incredibly unwell. We had shot about three episodes with Tim.

“I got a phone call from Tim’s wife, Joan, at the hotel and she said he was unwell, doubled up in pain and can’t move.

“I jumped into my car and went down there. He was in a pretty bad way.”

Tim was rushed to a private hospital in Spain and was in a coma for days with reports at the time saying he was fighting for his life.

As his illness worsened, Tim’s ex-wife Denise Welch is understood to have flown to Spain to visit him – while Joan kept a bedside vigil.

After his condition stabilised, doctors allowed the actor to fly to a hospital in Manchester.

Tim made a full recovery at his home in Wilmslow and has returned to filming series 10 of the show, which will air in the winter of 2018.

Reflecting on his recovery last month, Tim said his son Matty’s band The 1975 effectively saved his life.

The actor said his wife stuck by his side while he was in hospital and kept playing the band’s album to him.

He added: “She said that while I was in a coma she kept playing my son’s music to me; she had his album on a loop.

“After a few days I started smiling and then I came round, so it was my son’s music that brought me back to the land of the living.”
