Travel News:

Benidorm star Tim Healy to tee off in celebrity golf tournament for close pal

He performed all over Britain with the Royal National Theatre and starred on Broadway in New York.

But actor David Whitaker’s life was turned upside down when he suffered a severe stroke while on stage in London’s West End in 2012.

He has been left immobile and struggles to communicate, and now requires round-the-clock care at his home.

Now, Benidorm star Tim Healy will take to the golf course to raise much needed cash for his close pal of four decades.

The inaugural Tim Healy Celebrity Classic will take place later this year with a line up of celebrity guests.

Tim said: “Dave is a very good friend of mine. We started working with the Live Theatre Company in 1973 and we’ve been pals ever since.

“I was devastated when I found out he’d had a stroke and needs 24-hour care.

“It’s put a tremendous strain on his family having to find additional care costs and that’s why we want to raise as much money as possible.

“We want people to dig deep at the auctions and buy all these special prizes to help Dave and his family.”

The golf tournament will be held at the MacDonald Linden Hall Golf in Northumberland on Thursday, September 7.

It will begin with breakfast at 10am before the star-studded guests tee off at noon.

It will then be followed by a gala dinner, live music and an auction.

Guests will include snooker legend Willie Thorne, three times world darts champion John Lowe and Game of Thrones actor Clive Russell.

Cast members of the ITV show Benidorm will also attend the event, as well as a number of former Newcastle United footballers.

Organiser Karen Thornton Brown said: “We have fantastic on course entertainment throughout the day, including a Hole-in-One five star holiday and a world-famous golf trick shot show.

“Each participant will also receive a personalised welcome gift upon arrival.”

Tim first won over viewers with his role as Dennis Patterson in hit 1980s comedy Auf Wiedersehen Pet about a gang of Geordie builders in Germany.

More recently he starred as Gastric alongside David Jason in Still Open All Hours.

Tim split with Denise Welch, a former star of ITV’s Loose Women, in 2012 and married Joan in a surprise ceremony three years later.
