Travel News:

First parmos – now Teessiders can enjoy a Upex pie in Benidorm

The word Benidorm conjures up many things.

Sun, sea, Sangria and the infamous ‘strip’ – but Upex Pies?

However, those little tastes of Teesside are proving a smash hit on the Costa Blanca.

“More and more customers were mentioning ‘Upex pies would be a good idea’ – so you have to give the customer what the want,” said Michael Harvey.

He’s the 28-year-old owner of Harvey’s Bar, who brought the Parmo to the Med.

And his latest import is proving just as popular with ex-pats and holidaymakers gagging for a taste of Teesside.

“We stick with our own in Middlesbrough and I’ve found that out since I bought the bar,” added Michael, originally from Longlands.

“The response has been amazing since we put the on social media,” said Michael.

The issue isn’t getting them there but keeping them stocked up as according to Michael they are flying off the shelves.

And they even have a new celebrity fan.

Gogglebox star Sandi Bogle popped into the nightspot recently and apparently couldn’t get enough of them.

“Sandi said it was the best pie she has ever had,” he said.

“When we start something new, I usually try and get the bar owners, managers and staff in to try it.

“I was quite young when Upex pies were around, so I don’t remember them very much, just remember the gravy seeping out as soon as you cut into it, my favourite now are the chicken and gravy.”

Back in 2015, the cult pies returned to production after 20 years.

A favourite on the Ayresome Park terraces, Michael hopes they will be just as popular on the sandy beaches of Spain.

But after importing Upex Pies and parmos, will his next move involve the iconic Redcar Lemon Top?

“For now I think I’m just going to play around with the parmo concept,” said Michael.

“But I’m always trying to think, especially because we televise every Middlesbrough game, so what’s better than the Boro game, an ice cold beer and food that’s authentic food from the Boro?”
