A man called a woman ‘Madge from Benidorm’ and a ‘wrinkly old slag’ before attacking her during a night out to celebrate a 50th birthday.

Sam Hunter hurled abuse at Catherine Richardson, poured a dog bowl full of water on her head and hit her in the face, a court heard.

The 25-year-old launched his attack after a row with Ms Richardson’s friend over a taxi in Slaithwaite, West Yorkshire.

Philip Danielson, chairman of the bench at Kirkless magistrates, said: ‘We found that you pushed Ms Richardson with such force that she fell backwards and hit her elbows and head.

‘You said you acted in self-defence but we find that the prosecution have proved beyond reasonable doubt that you assaulted her.’
