‘Disgusting’ holidaying Brits slammed for mocking kidnapped Shannon Matthews at Benidorm fancy dress bash

Holidaying Brits have been blasted for their “disgusting” Shannon Matthews theme at a Benidorm fancy dress festival.

The gang of four were pictured wearing a Karen Matthews wig while proudly displaying a banner and T-shirts saying ‘Help Find Shannon’.

The missing youngster’s face on the banner and shirts has been Photoshopped to look like one of the group.

And one of the four is even pictured carrying a mattress – presumably a sinister nod to the fact Shannon was held captive in the base of a bed during her disappearance.

Images of the gang were shared on Facebook following a fancy dress fiesta in the Costa Blanca.

It immediately drew stinging criticism.

Marie Bloxham wrote: “Disgusting. Why would they find it funny to dress up like that is beyond me.”

Byron Smith added: “So sick, especially for those with a child genuinely missing… some things just aren’t funny!”

Sian Garner said: “Think that’s pretty poor taste to have on here.”

And Mary Cairns wrote: “Too many children are missing so why is this on here?? Sick!!!”

The same festival featured revellers dressed as golliwogs, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un.

Shannon Matthews was reported missing by her mum Karen from her home in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire in February 2008.

The case drew huge media publicity as search groups scoured the estate day and night to try to find the missing nine-year-old.

The search drew comparisons to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann a year earlier – and was subject of acclaimed BBC drama The Moorside earlier this year.

Shannon was found nearly a month after her disappearance in the home of Michael Donovan, which belonged to Karen’s boyfriend’s uncle.

Police later discovered the kidnapping was a sick plot between Karen and Donovan to trouser publicity money.

Donovan was jailed for eight years for abduction and false imprisonment and Matthews got the same sentence for child neglect and perverting the course of justice.
